{"id":4992,"date":"2020-09-29T18:35:05","date_gmt":"2020-09-29T16:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/izmf.sbg.ac.at\/?page_id=4823"},"modified":"2021-12-13T13:15:03","modified_gmt":"2021-12-13T12:15:03","slug":"dsp-kolleg-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/geschichte-studium.at\/izmf\/en\/dsp-kolleg-2\/","title":{"rendered":"DSP College"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row tlg_padding=&#8220;pt0 pb0&#8243;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">\u00a9 Michael Brauer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"headings-title\"><div class=\"mb72 mb16 mb-xs-40 text-center\"><h5  class=\"widgettitle mb0\">The DSP College<\/h5><div  class=\"widgetsubtitle\">Interdisciplinary Research of Historical Cultures<\/div><\/div><\/div>[vc_column_text]<strong>Cooperating institutions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The institutions cooperating in the College are the Interdisciplinary Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Times (IZMF), the Institute for Medieval and Early Modern Material Culture of the University of Salzburg in Krems (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imareal.sbg.ac.at\/\">IMAREAL<\/a>), the Middle High German Conceptual Database (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-salzburg.at\/index.php?id=75\">MHDBDB<\/a>) linked to the IZMF, the Center for Jewish Cultural History (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-salzburg.at\/index.php?id=142\">ZJK<\/a>) and the Department of Classical Studies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-salzburg.at\/index.php?id=12\">FB Altertumswissenschaften<\/a>), to which the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum (<a href=\"http:\/\/csel.sbg.ac.at\/\">CSEL<\/a>) is linked. The departments of German Studies, History, Art-Music-Dance Science and Practical Theology are also part of this cooperation.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Description, justification, unique differentiators<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The<strong> unique <\/strong><strong>differentiators <\/strong>of the College are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the<strong> broad interdisciplinary base<\/strong> including history, philology, art science, archaeology and theology;<\/li>\n<li><strong>the comparative study of historical cultures<\/strong> that are usually explored separately considering classical and Jewish antiquity, the Christian and Jewish Middle Ages and early modern times;<\/li>\n<li>the combination of <strong>theoretical research<\/strong> with the innovative methodological analysis of<strong> different primary sources<\/strong> (material, image and written sources) using <strong>digital humanities<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>cooperation on an institutional level that is not restricted to departments but includes <strong>faculties<\/strong> and also aims at a stronger <strong>cooperation of university centres<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"DE\">The general<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"> field of investigation <\/span><\/strong>of the College is historical cultures from antiquity to the early modern period. The aim is to explore their interdisciplinary scientific content with two central aspects: the difference of historical cultures to the present, i.e. <strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">phenomena of historical <\/span><\/strong><b>alterity<\/b> on several cultural levels such as politics and society, aesthetics, mediality, gender relations, collective and subjective identities, rituality and performance, historical \u201cways of worldmaking\u201d (Nelson Goodman) such as time, space, memory, religion and phenomena of <strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">transhistorical effect<\/span><\/strong> of historical cultures on the present which also exist on the cultural levels listed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"DE\">The focus is on classical, especially Roman antiquity, Jewish antiquity, the Christian and Jewish Middle Ages and the early modern period with its essential phenomena of awakening, expanding the horizon beyond Europe to be concrete. Scientific analysis is based on all areas of tradition that we can use. The College\u2019s aim is to examine these <strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">areas of tradition<\/span><\/strong> especially in their interrelations as you would expect it from a modern cultural-scientific-interdisciplinary practice. The cooperating institutions have applied these forms of interdisciplinary research for a long time, with the IZMF and the IMAREAL having been established exactly for this purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"DE\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Interdisciplinarity<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"DE\"> means to be aware of the<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"> interference of the object areas<\/span><\/strong>, such as historical processes or the production of literature and arts in forms of historical culture. Regarding theory and methodology, it also means productive<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"> interference in scientific working<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">methods<\/span><\/strong>, that \u2013 put simply \u2013 you can and should be willing to learn from each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"DE\">Cultural interference is also interesting for the <strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">reprofiling <\/span><\/strong>of the aforementioned historical cultures in synchronous and diachronic terms. It is common opinion today that classical antiquity, for example, cannot be regarded as a closed situation unaffected by other cultures which is also true for ancient Judaism. Following this idea of complex interference, the College is deliberately aware of the \u201cprovisional\u201d and \u201cconstructed \u201d character of a sharp division of epochs and explores both historical breaks and continuities. They can fall back on preliminary work by the IZMF and the IMAREAL. (Cf. the volume: Kontinuit\u00e4ten, Umbr\u00fcche, Z\u00e4suren. Hg. von Thomas K\u00fchtreiber und Gabriele Schichta, Heidelberg: Winter, 2016 (Interdisziplin\u00e4re Beitr\u00e4ge zu Mittelalter und Fr\u00fcher Neuzeit 6), which dates back to a joint meeting of IZMF and IMAREAL.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Research programme(s) the College starts from or is embedded in<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"DE\">For several years, the IZMF has defined key research topics to bundle the work of the centre. Since its foundation, interdisciplinary research at the IMAREAL has focused on the productive approach that the examination of <strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">materiality and mediality of <\/span><\/strong>historical cultures opens up. The so-called \u201cmaterial turn\u201d has given this aspect a new theoretical and object-related impulse. Consequently, questions about historical materiality and their cultural significance (e.g. with regard to identity and gender, aesthetics and social communication) are to form a central area of work of the College, being investigated in a few dissertation projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"DE\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Exploring<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"DE\"> textual, especially literary sources from the viewpoint of modern <b>edition philology<\/b> is another field of special interest where the CSEL brings in internationally highly recognised expertise. Edition theory and edition practice (which must differ from the methodology of classical philology in the field of medieval vernaculars), questions of manuscript culture and media communication of literature are in the centre of Salzburg\u2019s medieval literary studies. Dissertation projects are deal with in this field. Other dissertation projects explore <strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">interferences of historical cultures<\/span><\/strong> considering the mentioned aspects of mediality, rituality and textuality or aspects of linguistic history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"DE\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Digital research tools<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"DE\"> play an increasing role in historical sciences where the involved institutions, namely the IMAREAL and the MHDBDB, provide an outstanding institutional and operational basis for the College.
